The route to the 2022 Kentucky Derby ends Saturday in Keenland.
Downey Port (5-2) is a Grade 3, morning-tax favorite for $ 400,000 Lexington Stakes. It is 5:16 pm EDT from Lexington, Ky., TVG shows 1 1/16-mile stock for 3 year olds.
The Lexington final points stop on the way to the Kentucky Derby will run on May 7 for the 148th time. Saturday’s points are awarded to the top four finishers at the 20-8-4-2 level, which gives them the ability to add late play to the derby bubble.
Of the 11 runners lined up for Lexington, only Downey Port currently makes the opening gate of the Kentucky Derby. He finished second on the 20-horse leaderboard on April 2 after finishing second at Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park with 40 points.
Instead of gambling that those 40 points would be enough, coach Brad Cox chose to wheel the Pioneer Nile ass again in the Keyland two weeks later. That was before the Saturday news Slow Down Andy with 50 points left Derby with a feverSo Downey Port has confirmed the call for the May 7 Classic.
Two Lexington Stakes starters, just in time (3-1) and Ethereal Road (10-1), are sitting at 20 points. If one wins one of them will get 40 points and a derby call.
Two Time’s only previous derby-trail launch, like the one in Lexington, came on March 5 at the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), which runs 1 1/16 miles away. Kelly Breen, a trainee, came home that day at Gulfstream Park behind the simplification.
Ethereal Road ran most recently, finishing seventh last Saturday in the Blue Cross Stakes (G1) in Keyland. Coach D. Wayne Lucas put a proverb through that race, bringing him back seven days later and making the jockey transition from Louise Contreras to Victor Espinosa on the Rebel Stakes (G2) runner-up.
Beyond the Downey Port trio, Du Time and Ethereal Road, the other eight Lexington Stakes starters will need outside help to build the Kentucky Derby opening gates, even with Saturday’s win.
The Major General (4-1) earned 10 derby points by defeating the Iroquois Stakes (G3) in Churchill Towns last September, but finished 10th in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on 12 March. Keith Desormeaux, winner of Lecomte Stakes (G3), who finished sixth on March 26 at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana Derby (G2), is training for Cal Me Midnight (6-1).
The last Lexington Stakes runner to win the Charismatic Kentucky Derby in 1999, Lucas won both events. 2021 Lexington winner King Fury leaves Derby Stadium.
